Oh, really? You’re going to the mall today? You and the rest of America. The Saturday before Christmas is, historically, even crazier day than Black Friday. This year is a little different, since Christmas Eve is also a Saturday. Malls will be open until 5 or 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, but crowds are sure to thin out by afternoon. Which brings us back to this weekend, when everyone will be shopping. The National Retail Federation reported this week that the average person has completed less than half her shopping.
In lieu of a personal elf, here’s some advice:
-
Go early, stay late. Most malls are open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. this week (Rosedale will be open until 11 p.m. on Friday) and 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The Rosedale Macy’s will be open for 83 hours straight starting Wednesday at 7 a.m. Weeknights, even this week before Christmas, will be a lot more manageable than Saturday at the mall.
-
Make a list, and check it online. Do your price comparisons and check inventory in advance to cut down on in-store hassles.
-
Get crafty. On Saturday, Dec. 17, Calhoun Square will host 20 artists selling everything from jewelry to pottery. On Monday, Dec. 19, there’s a craft market happening at Modern Times Café. More event details here.
-
Get out of the mall. Victory in Linden Hills is all decked out for the holidays, and even if you don’t find the right gift, you’ll leave inspired rather than stressed. The Bee Cottage in Excelsior is nice for festive candles (and Santa matchboxes) and vintage Christmas décor. General Store of Minnetonka is a tried and true stop for everything from toys to gourmet gift baskets, and there’s a café.
-
Think beauty. Pampering is always appreciated, and spas have some great deals going: Get a $25 gift card when you buy one worth $150 at Spalon Montage. Get a spa gift set when you purchase a gift card for $50 or more at Rocco Altobelli. At Sanctuary SalonSpa, get the gift card purchase out of the way so you can take advantage of specials this week only, like a 50 minute massage for $50 or 10 percent off hair extensions.
-
Get it wrapped. StyledLife has its top eight gifts wrapped and ready to go. russell + hazel has all sorts of gift combos at the ready, and will also create one just for you.
-
Stock up on memorable hostess gifts. The hot chocolate and gourmet marshmallows at Williams-Sonoma are one of my favorites. Crate & Barrel is a great place for lasting gifts: mugs, candles, frames—and many are on sale. Make a CD mix—it gets the party started, and shows you put some thought into it.
-
Distract the kids! They’re on break; you need to shop. St. Louis Park toy/art store Kiddywampus is offering in-store classes and art projects all week.
-
Place online orders by the beginning of the week. Some sites will guarantee Christmas Eve delivery through Dec. 19 or 20. After that, it’s going to cost you extra.
-
Take note of what you want for yourself. Because what you don’t receive will probably be on sale next week.

I got a sneak peek of the new StyledLife at the Galleria in Edina and was most impressed – not just by the dynamic space, but the thought that went into planning every last detail down to the juxtaposed glass panels to suggest both a masculine and feminine aesthetic. Owner Kevin Quinn has put everything into this gorgeous new store and it shows. Beyond the superhero-sized door and cool, clean ambiance are a lot of insightful decisions sure to make a big difference without the average customer having the faintest idea. Some SL secrets:
-
Two doors. If you miss – or are intimidated by – the enormous main entrance, there's another way in just a few feet away. The Galleria resisted, but Quinn convinced them it would make a difference. So many people look, hesitate, but keep walking, he observed in his old space. "I honestly believe I could have made hundreds more sales if I had a second point of entry." Now, he'll find out.
-
Commerce Free Zone. He could have filled this space with $50,000 worth of designer bags. Instead, Quinn made the conscious decision to devote prime floor space to an inspiration wall. There's a bulletin board of cool designs, a statement about the store, information about charitable giving and the element sure to garner the most attention: a desk where visitors are invited to write down their "fashion fears." Best one each month is worth a $50 store gift card. Brilliant.
-
Branding. Lots of stores sell accessories. Not a lot of independent accessories stores specialize in designer brands. To make the distinction clear, the big names – Valentino, Pucci, Missoni – will be tastefully identified along the wall. Not only to let you know the store has them, but to make shopping easy for the luxury customer who knows what she wants and doesn't want to be bothered.
-
The reality shelf. We love the look, but not all of us can afford it. SL offers some less expensive (still not cheap) options, but you won't find them side to side with the designer goods. When Quinn tried placing designer scarf next to less expensive scarf, the pricey one didn't sell. Even a customer willing and able to drop $350 is going to have second thoughts when confronted with the $100 option. So the "fashion" alternatives will have their own section further back in the store.
-
The $68 necklace. SL didn't have these when it opened three years ago. But times have changed and so has the customer's mindset. The $68 price point is one Quinn finds most shoppers see as accessible. It's an amount you might spend on a whim. Knowing those items are there puts customers at ease about the more expensive goods they are then more likely to buy.
-
The $38 and $48 sunglasses. You'd expect a store selling $1,200 handbags to offer equally luxurious shades. Nope. There are plenty of places to get those. And Quinn knows his customer is making choices. Splurge on the bag; go budget friendly on the glasses. His have the designer look without the price since they are manufactured in the same factory that makes Prada.
-
The three-way. Mirror, that is. It didn't dawn on Quinn he'd need one of these in a store that doesn't sell clothes, but a woman wants the full view, even when considering a bag, a scarf, a belt. Now she'll have it.
-
StyledGift. This is a new category that Quinn finally has space to introduce, but he's doing it in a very disciplined way. You'll only find gifts that tie back to fashion, like a purse hanger or pretty compact.
-
The front desk. It took a lot of convincing for this one to fly at the notoriously strict Galleria, but Quinn is a firm believer in having staff positioned where they can greet every customer – without getting in their face.
-
StyledLook. At the back of the store is a generous space for the other critical piece of Quinn's business: wardrobe consulting. It's quiet and can be closed off. Here, Quinn and his associates will work one on one with women who want help getting their life and look, well, styled. Take advantage of the free 30-minute session.

You've seen them in magazines and probably figured the preposterous
heel-less heel would never make it off the pages. But StyledLife associate Allison Werthmann-Radnich rocked Fendi's floating heels for a
fashion seminar at the Galleria yesterday…and didn't stumble even
once. She paid just $80 for them at designer resale boutique June and rounded out the look with a $10 dress from The Clearance Rack at 35th and Nicollet in Minneapolis layered over long and short sleeve tops and French Connection Liquid Leather pants from Macy's. You've got to admire the effort – and the fact that she stood on her tiptoes in those shoes all day long.

From the moment StyledLife opened at the Galleria in Edina, the days seemed numbered for the boutique's original location at Gaviidae Center. Indeed, AliShops.com broke the news today that StyledLife will close its downtown Minneapolis store at the end of the month (see Sales/Specials for closing sale details). SL owner Kevin Quinn has been a big proponent of downtown shopping and I know he really wanted to hang on, but it just wasn't financially feasible – and I don't think the current state of the economy is the only factor. I know I've visited SL at the Galleria more times in the few months since its opening than I did at Gaviidae in the last year. I feel bad about that – I want to live in a city with a thriving downtown district, but the reality is, the 'burbs are easy and Galleria is really inviting. I also feel bad for Gaviidae because they've really been trying to champion the small boutique and do their best to create an interesting, unique shopping mix. They've also done what they can to make downtown shopping more appealing, by waiving parking fees and hosting events. Of course there are still plenty of reasons to go to Gaviidae – FinnStyle, Drama, Off Fifth, to name a few. But StyledLife was clearly a point of pride for the center, and the kind of stand-out, luxury boutique that should be able to thrive in downtown Minneapolis. It's a shame, all around.

Just months after opening at the Galleria in Edina, StyledLife is planning a bigger and better Galleria flagship. Locations are still being considered, owner Kevin Quinn tells me, but he plans to open the store by fall. Meanwhile, the semi-annual sale which was supposed to end Feb. 23 continues at the Gaviidae Common StyledLife in downtown Minneapolis, no spring arrivals are on display and the Laffy Taffy is down to an ashtray-sized bowl of apple only. Quinn isn't commenting. Draw your own conclusions – and take advantage of the jewelry, scarves, belts and handbags at 50 to 70 percent off!

Guys, are you shopping tonight? Stores seem to think you'll show up if they ply you with beer and scotch. Is it true? StyledLife has a men's shopping night going on this evening, and so does The Grand Hand Gallery (GH will do it again on the 22nd). Stella in Stillwater will do a men's night Friday evening. They've got booze (warning: shopping while drinking can be dangerous for the bank account), shopping assistants, gift wrap and StyledLife will even turn its flat screens to ESPN (who knew they went there!). We know women love event shopping – primarily for the multi-tasking of being able to socialize and knock items of their never-ending to do list. I'll be curious to know if men go for it as well.

Bumped into Galleria execs doing a bit of pre-shopping at StyledLife on Tuesday. They were gushing over the hats, the bags, the jewels and I must admit, so was I. The store opens Thursday (right across from Tiffany’s), and it’s a sure hit. Saw many pieces I wish I could afford – a spectacular $500 jeweled flower bracelet Carrie Bradshaw would have forfited her rent check for, some grommeted brown leather bags at the same price point. But I was pleased to see that owner Kevin Quinn is sensitive to the current economy. He’s added Hillary Radley (yes, the coat maker) bags – super chic at around $200; some amazing chunky silver necklaces and bracelets for less than $200; a must-have long, drapey sweater for $148 that I want to wear all winter long; and the earring bar, with prices around $40.
It’s no wonder the powers that be at Galleria are celebrating with a bit of shopping, in addition to getting StyledLife (they weren’t the only mall in town to vie for store number two), four expansions are in the works. Oh Baby! will be a traffic nightmare no more when it moves to a sprawling spot across from BCBG next spring, broadens its assortment for infants and toddlers and adds bedroom accessories. Sister store Scandia Down is also moving to the BCBG cooridor with a larger space to showcase its luxury European bed and bath lines. L’Occitane is also doubling its size, as is InVision optical.

While it would be lovely to think good, unique stores would attract shoppers to downtown Minneapolis, the reality in this town is something (depressingly) different. There are a whole lotta people with money to spend who simply don’t go downtown. And so, Kevin Quinn has decided to bring his successful Gaviidae Common accessories boutique StyledLife to them. It’s a decision I know he’s been contemplating for quite a long time and now that he’s made the commitment, he’s having some fun with it. We have to guess where he’s going. A new clue will be revealed each Friday for the next five weeks leading up to the store opening in October. If you want to play along, go to www.ImpossiblyChic.com. Guesses, anyone?
