Now Open: Paper Hat

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

South Minneapolis loves its local shops, so here’s hoping Paper Hat can pick up where Inizio left off at 50th & Penn. Greta Norlander’s sunny boutique is filled with artisan made gifts: jewelry, scarves, retro aprons, bath and body. I liked finding things I haven’t seen everywhere, like belts made of men’s ties sewn together.

Sprinkled among the useful items are decorative pieces – paintings, prints and pottery – that make for budget-conscious opportunities to dip a toe into art collecting.

Even if you have a favorite gift store, this one is worth a look. Don’t let the busy intersection stop you – it’s fine to park in the Broder’s lot.

Patina Re-Opening Plans

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

A re-opening is finally within sight for Patina, which lost its south Minneapolis store to a devastating fire more than a year ago. Though it looks like little more than the foundation has been laid at 50th & Bryant, co-owner Christine Ward is targeting an August opening. Unfortunately, Patina’s Shoppe Local will not return as a separate store, but you will find many of the Minnesota brands within the main store, along with tons of new product and a re-imagined layout. If there’s a retailer capable of a smart refresh, it’s Patina.

Opening Soon…

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Good news: The pace of store openings seems to be picking up. Here are just a few I’m excited to see in the coming weeks:

Paper Hat Co. plans to open before the end of June in the former Inizio space at 2309 W. 50th St., Minneapolis. The store will specialize in art, gifts and handmade objects.

Room No. 3, a new lingerie boutique, plans to open June 30 at 50th & France – 4948 France Ave. S., Edina.

Paperista is leaving the Semple Mansion and moving beyond custom invitations. The new flagship, also at 50th & France, will offer stationery and entertaining accessories as well as design services. A July 9 opening is planned at 5023 France Ave. S.

Inizio Closing

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Just a year after moving to South Minneapolis, Inizio is closing. The 11-year-old gift store relocated from Calhoun Commons to 50th & Penn in Minneapolis, which seemed a risky proposition for a store that was always solid, but never a true destination like Patina or Bibelot. But once I saw the warm space, reinvigorated merchandise, and owner Patricia Hefferan’s enthusiasm for bringing a gift shopping to her own neighborhood, I thought 50th & Penn might finally have found a store that would stick. But even in an urban neighborhood, it’s tough to draw a crowd – especially during a long winter. I thought Hefferan was smart to post big signs inviting customers to park in the Broder’s lot, but even that, it seems, was not enough.

“This difficult decision was something I have been thinking about for a very long time,” Hefferan says. “I enjoyed the last year in the new location – I am glad I made the move. After 11 years, it simply feels like the right time in my life to close the store and move on to something new.”

Good thing Patina is rebuilding at 50th & Bryant.

As for Inizio, save 30 to 60 percent storewide, including spring arrivals. The store will remain open through April, if inventory lasts.

Not another look

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Another Look consignment boutique at 50th and Xerxes in South Minneapolis is out of business. The message when you call the store blames "disappointing holiday sales, rising costs and the poor economic climate." The only surprise is that those very conditions have been said to make the market ripe for consignment shopping, with more shoppers looking for deals and cleaning out their own closets to make some spending money. Consigning is suddenly chic, and "green." The past few months have seen the opening of several new Twin Cities consignment stores, including June in Minneapolis, Karma Clothing Co. in Stillwater and Boomerang Kids in Hudson. Let's hope they fare better. South Minneapolis is home to several other popular consignment shops (which could have been part of the problem for Another Look), including Nu Look and Fashion Avenue. | Mpls.St.Paul Magazine © 2008 MSP Communications, Inc.
