Golden Globes fashion 2011

Sandra Bangs Bullock

Here’s what I think happened: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds were goofing around, for baby Louie’s entertainment – singing, dancing, jumping about, when KAPOW! – like a scene straight out of “The Proposal,” they bonked heads, leaving Sandy with a honking hematoma, hours before the red carpet – thus giving birth to the evenings top hair trend not to follow: clip on bangs!

Natalie Portman

On the subject of hair, I have this to say about Natalie Portman (besides wholehearted congratulations on the win): I know she’s pregnant and probably worried about face-puffing, but really, she is amazing with short hair. Lop off the ballerina bun and own it. I was a big fan of her Viktor & Rolf dress with the sparkling red rose adornment – perfectly elegant, yet quirky and sweet to showcase her blossoming belly.

Anne Hathaway

Loved Anne Hathaway in her golden Armani Prive. What a bod. WHAT a bod. But it was also a rockin, unexpected choice – and so fun to see her in something non-princess-y. Moral of the story: Rachel Zoe could dress an A-lister from the delivery room – and that is exactly what she might have to do for the Oscars. Bananas.

Adored Olivia Wilde‘s sparkling ball gown as well.

Green was the color of the night – loved it when first spotted on Angelina Jolie, but her actual dress was a bit boring and her fawing over Brad was entirely annoying. Red was another frequent choice..with some unfortunate results, like January Jones’ tacky straps and Julianne Moore’s one pouffed sleeve. Together, perhaps they would have had enough material to make something.

Olivia Wilde

Lea Michele stuck with Oscar de la Renta ruffles, but went pink…and proved that, well, black is better.

As for Halle Berry and Sofia Vergara why bother even discussing the dresses. They are obscenely gorgeous.

Oscars fashion: Cinderella story

Gabourey
Gabourey Sidibe might be new to Hollywood, but she's a quick study. She knocked it out of the park in Marchesa at the Academy Awards. And inspired real women everywhere.

Oscars fashion: 3 for 1

Zoesaldana
Such a shame. Gorgeous Zoe Saldana got so swept up in the moment, she just couldn't settle on one dress. So she picked three. And the bottom spoiled the top.

Oscars fashion: Edgy, or eh?

Carey
Best actress nominee Carey Mulligan is the name that kept surfacing as I talked to fashion insiders this week about who to watch on the carpet. She's already emerging as a fashionista and has gained respect for interesting and daring fashion choices throughout the awards season. I'm just waiting for the critics on tomorrow's fashion wraps to educate us on how this is High Fashion. This is genius. This is PRADA. But that won't make me like it any better. Just not so crazy about the look. I wanted her to look softer. And didn't find the shorter length in front especially flattering – certainly not on those stairs.

Red carpet observations

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Wshew. Just gave tomorrow's Oscars fashion page a final read for the St. Paul Pioneer Press (it's got to start printing if it is to arrive on your doorstep – in color! – by dawn). First impressions are always most telling, but with a bit of time to look beyond the shimmer, it's worth noting that while most shoulders were bare, there was very little in the way of cleavage on the red carpet – in all, a very elegant, lady-like showing. Of course, as I have now had a couple of hours to mull some of the dresses, I can plainly say that my dislike for Miley Cyrus' dress has grown to horror. I want to pull that stupid knit cap of Philip Seymore Hoffman's head. I am still marveling at Meryl Streep, proud of Kate Winslet, charmed by Taraji Henson, bored with Sarah Jessica and I think I'd understand if my husband left me for Natalie Portman. Just forward my mail to Hugh Jackman's place.

Roland
Pamella Roland
must be the most down-to-earth A-list designer (credit her Michigan roots?). So far this awards season, you've seen her dresses on Emily Blunt and Jenna Fischer at the SAGs; and Amy Poehler and Jessica Carpenter at the Golden Globes. And you found out about it at the same time she did. Roland tells me she never knows whether star is wearing her dress until she seems them on the red carpet. Usually, their stylists pull dresses at the very last minute (actresses love the drama) and sometimes, without even informing the designer. Unless they need custom – like Queen Latifah. "She can't really jump into a sample size," says Roland, who has done a number of dresses for the rapper/actress.
"I hate to admit it, but it really does translate into sales," Roland told me on "Shop Girls." She's flattered when her dresses get knocked off.
So far this season, she thought Emily Blunt (pictured) looked "amazing." And Angelina Jolie, who she has dressed in the past, "very boring" in her drapey numbers. "I don't think she cares that much," Roland says. The star to dress at the moment: Kate Winslet.
But first, Roland has to get her son to hockey practice.

Oscars fashion review

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Whsew. Time flies when you’re judging red carpet fashions from the Academy Awards. My deadline for the St. Paul Pioneer Press has long since passed – the report will be in Monday’s paper. But I couldn’t let all the great comments from local boutique owner Stephanie Morrissey go to waste. It’s no surprise that her shop, Stephanie’s, has a fab dress section – Morrissey is a red carpet devotee. Here are the awards she handed out for the evening:
Best Supportive Dress: Kristen Chenoweth
Best Visual Effects: John Travolta’s hair stylist
Best Animated Short: Ryan Seacrest
Most Unusual Handbag:  Amy Adams
Best Jewelry: Jennifer Garner
Best Dress: Anne Hathaway
Worst Dress: Tied – Diablo Cody (in a frock borrowed from Betty Rubble) and Marion Cotillard (impersonating a mermaid)

Other random thoughts: Why does Cameron Diaz keep getting invited? Refreshingly real to see a pregnant actress in flats – Cate Blanchett, but what an unfortunate neckline. Jennifer Hudson’s boobs speak for themselves – a dress outlining them is a bit much. Nicole Kidman looked like she was wearing a chandelier around her neck. Wow, motherhood agrees with Keri Russell, and the layers of necklaces looked great with that pale strapless bodice. Nice to see Amy Adam’s red hair long and glamorous, after all of those messy updos and the green dress was a good choice for her, but she took evening bags to a whole new level of pointlessness, carrying a gold mesh adornment with nothing in it! Not even a lipstick!
