Outlet intelligence

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The thing about outlet shopping is it's hit and miss. You have to be willing to dig and sometimes leave empty handed. That's why I applaud Oh Baby! Outlet for being so forthcoming about what's in store each week at the new Wayzata shop. New today, for example: Lili Gaufrette spring 2009 fashions, nursery furniture, moses baskets and bedding. While it doesn't guarantee that you'll walk out with what you want, at least you have a better idea what to expect. Visit the website before you shop each Thursday through Saturday and when you're there, sign up for the email list for more insider tips.

When an outlet isn’t

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

There should be a law against calling a store an "outlet" when it isn't. We all know (or should) that you can't assume the deals are legit at an outlet mall – I warn shoppers about that all the time. Still, there's something about that term that makes even an educated bargain shopper hopeful. I fell for the sign at the "Lighting Outlet" in Golden Valley. What a joke. The prices were no better than Lowes, which is where I ended up finding a fixture I preferred – "full" price and all.

Local outlet shopping

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

As alluded to in a previous post, I got a peek at the Uber Outlet at 60th and Lyndale in Minneapolis, which is scheduled to open next week. It’s big. There will be fitting rooms and a play area for kids, but the decor will be simple to keep to the focus on deals – maternity and baby clothes as well as other categories, like accessories. I’ll have an article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press next week about the growing number of local retailers that favor outlets over in-store sales, and more specifics on the Uber Outlet will be posted at AliShops.com. But let me leave you with one more pertinent detail: while the Uber Outlet will sell clearance goods from Expecting Uber Baby and Uber Baby at the Galleria, much of the merchandise will be brought in especially for the outlet. On the one hand, it’s another much-needed destination for better quality clothes at affordable prices. On the other, it could be a bit disappointing to those hoping to find deals on merchandise they specifically saw at the Galleria. What do you think?
