MK in MN

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Michael Kors opened Friday at Mall of America, first level, outside Bloomingdale’s. The store is shiny and sleek, but smaller than I imagined and more like Coach than I expected. The focus is on bags – and there are lots worth coveting. Clothes were relegated to the back corner, and all from the more affordable Michael Michael Kors collection. Don’t get me wrong – those are the pieces I can afford and they look great, but I’d probably shop for them first at Macy’s, where they’re likely to be on sale. I was expected a broader brand experience from MK’s first Minnesota store. The only items from the high-end Collection are a few bags. Perhaps MK is just being practical. Clearly, the company has some faith in this market – a second Michael Kors store will open at Southdale in November.

Maria Rivolta Moving to MOA

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

One step forward, another step back for Southdale.

The struggling Edina mall recently scored a victory in signing Michael Kors (opening planned for holiday time), which will also open at Mall of America in September. (Guess MK is hot on the southwest metro – it’s surprising to see a retailer open stores at MOA and Southdale back to back.) Francesca’s Collections is also coming to Southdale in early 2012 and Herberger’s is scheduled to open in early November.

Meanwhile, local retailer Marge Schwab just announced she is moving her little gem, Maria Rivolta, from Southdale to MOA (the mall started wooing her soon after she opened last year). The last day to shop the affordably priced Argentinian jewelry line – known for mixed material and color – is Tuesday, Aug. 30. The new store will open at MOA, first level, outside Bloomingdale’s, on Oct. 1.

Designer Arrivals for MOA

Monday, March 28th, 2011
Put in white marble floors and the designer stores will follow. Mall of America is getting Armani A|X, Michael Kors and Stuart Weitzman. All three have signed leases to open sizable stores in the remodeled south wing, where Burberry has undoubtedly been a bit lonely.
“We are continuing to lure luxury retailers to Mall of America after the South Avenue renovation,” said Maureen Bausch, MOA’s executive vice president of business development, in a statement today. East Broadway will get a makeover this summer, with a Soho vibe.
Meanwhile, Armani Exchange plans to open this summer, with its street-chic mix for women and men. Michael Kors will follow in the fall, offering the full range of accessories and shoes from the Michael Kors, KORS Michael Kors and MICHAEL Michael Kors collections, as well as ready to wear, fragrance, watches and eyewear. The Stuart Weitzman store will feature shoes and handbags. All three are firsts for the Twin Cities.
Other newcomers announced today: two international retailers, Barcelona-based clothing chain Desigual and Superdry, a British chain; Bettie Page, a retro shop featuring timeless pieces (think pencil skirts and circle dresses), retro accessories and lingerie from sizes XS to 4X; See’s Candies first year-round store in Minnesota and finally something new (again) for the fourth floor, Sky Deck Sports Grille and Lanes, which promises “Minnesota’s most unique bowling experience,” video games, sports viewing, burgers and pizza.
Meanwhile, Merrell Shoes plans to open this month on the north side and Naartjie Kids is now scheduled to open on the south side in May.

Michael Kors returns (finally) to Project Runway this week and wastes no time beating up on Minnesota's Christopher Straub. TV Guide network has the clip.

Meanwhile, fellow MN designer Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman is moving out after getting ousted last week. He joined Alexis and me on Shop Girls Saturday to talk about life after Project Runway…and bad teeth. Listen to a podcast of the interview. Plus, read about one of his unlikely upcoming projects here.

Project Runway is back

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Clear a spot in your viewing schedule ("Private Practice" is lame-o anyway) – Project Runway returns for a fourth season on Nov. 14. I’ve seen the first episode (perk of the job). The names are new, but the characters are starting to blend together – the plump and capable funny guy, the effeminate weirdo, the antisocial girl, the arrogant butch guy. Heidi Klum looks ridiculously good. Tim Gunn needs some new lines if he has even the remotest hope of escaping the caricature he’s become. Michael Kors and Nina Garcia are back for more (as if they’d give up the spotlight?). Even so, the show remains totally watchable and one of the best reality series on TV, whether or not you’re obsessed with fashion. Monique Lhuillier is the first guest judge and I’d tell you who is first to be booted, but Bravo would undoubtedly hunt me down and have me permanently muzzled. Wonder if they’d use cotton or silk?
