Lululemon Hits St. Paul

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Lululemon Athletica opens its first St. Paul store Friday, Oct. 21 at Grand and Victoria. The fast growing Canadian company also has stores at West End in St. Louis Park and Mall of America. Lulu has already named its St. Paul “ambassadors;” they are six local fitness instructors, including Amelia Ruth (pictured) of CorePower Yoga. At lululemon, selling lifestyle is as important as each pair of essential black yoga pants. This store, like the others, will offer complimentary in store classes and host a running group led by the local ambassadors. Click here for upcoming events. 870 Grand Ave., St. Paul

Athleta Picks MN Location

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Fitness over food! There’s been much speculation about what would take the place of Ann Taylor Loft at the coveted southwest corner of 50th & France. Several local boutiques looked at the space, but couldn’t afford it, and there was some talk about a restaurant. I’m happy to report that upscale fitness brand Athleta is taking the spot. Nothing against the food industry – I just think 50th already has a robust dining scene, and adding another store–especially one new to the Twin Cities–makes this shopping district even more desirable. It’s also nice to see a chain pick a neighborhood location over a mall.

Known primarily for its catalog/website, Athleta was purchased by Gap Inc. in 2008 and is now aggressively opening stores, with eight to 10 openings nationwide planned for this year. (Watch out, Lululemon–and at 50th, Title Nine.) Athleta offers chic active apparel for yoga, hiking, golf, triathlon, travel, and more. Coming soon to 5001 France Ave. S., Mpls.

Yoga at the mall

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

The Mall of America is a lot of things – biggest shopping center in the nation, one of the busiest tourist destinations in the country, home of the SpongeBob roller coaster – but a place of Zen, it is not. Or at least it wasn’t. Powerhouse yoga retailer Lululemon opens at MOA on Friday, Oct. 15 and will show off its sculpted booty in the mall rotunda Sunday for an 8 am. yoga session led by phillyd’s Inspirational Hip Hop Yoga. Imagine how well equipped you’ll be to handle the line at Nordstrom Rack after that.

Coming to MOA

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Betsey Betsey Johnson finally opened today at Mall of America (thanks for the pics, ED!) and soon she'll have some new friends. Francesca's opens Saturday. And coming soon: American Eagle's new kids concept, 77Kids(especially cool for boys – I've been shopping it online). Two others MOA can't claim as exclusive, but they are still new: Lululemon Athletica (also opening next week at Shops at West End in St. Louis Park) and Soma Intimates(which opened this week at Rosedale Center). Stay tuned – more arrivals to be announced soon.

West End update

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Caught up today with the developer of The Shops at West End who has been working against odds to lease the new outdoor center at Highway 100 and 394 in St. Louis Park that broke ground just before the economy crashed. It's taken considerably longer than expected, but that's partly because they are sticking to their original upscale concept, targeting fashionable, urban women 20-55 who want the latest – as long as parking is convenient and free. The payoff will finally start to be realized in April and May with the opening of Lululemon Athletica yoga wear and Republic of Couture, a boutique-y chain offering trendy labels like William Rast and Hugo Boss for women and men. Both are new to the Twin Cities – an admirable goal of the developer's. (Anthropologie and Love Culture are currently holding down the retail front along with local fave Creative Kidstuff.) The other priority: a mix of local boutiques, and to that end: Uptown retailer Ini Iyamba has signed on to do an Ivy women and men's store and Amy Briesemeister will resurrect her Long Lake boutique Pink Champagne. Also opening this spring: Uber Baby and Hot Mama. Raze, a men's hair salon from Regis, is scheduled to open March 1, followed by Toby Keith's bar and grill the third week of March with more food concepts to come including Mexican, pizza, crepes, a wine bar and – fingers crossed – a local coffee/dessert joint that would be open late. As the action picks up this spring, don't be surprised if a few national chains flee their current Minneapolis or west metro (watch out, Ridgedale) homes to join West End.
