Love it: Tulle

Friday, October 29th, 2010

When an adorable jacket turns out to be delightfully affordable, good chance it’s Tulle. I’ve been a fan of this contemporary brand for years – the quality and design are superior to what you’d expect to find from the usual fast fashion outlets and the price seals the deal: $68 for this dress; $80 for the faux-leather bomber jacket. You’ll find them both – and much, much more at Karma on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, which just received it’s largest Tulle shipment ever. Hurry!

On the scene at our spring fashion shoot

Facebook allison
Woke up to a windchill…a perfect day to model spring fashions! Working on the March 8 spring fashion section for the St. Paul Pioneer Press with photographer Chris Polydoroff today. At this very moment, hair is being teased, lips are being glossed, poses are being struck and belts and shoes are being mismatched – purposely! Here's our beauty team from Root salon in St. Paul getting the models prepped (that's me off to the right thinking deep thoughts about a trench coat). Insider beauty tip: hot rollers work wonders – and fast.
Expect to see easy, breezy dresses, slouchy jeans and cropped pants, and lots of neutrals, which are so much fun to accessorize. But we're all drooling over a colorful, long Johnny Was slip dress from Karma. Helps to be 5-foot-11, add a 5-inch heel and not an ounce of fat. And the models are eating pizza! Hate them.

Post-Christmas wakeup call

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

The consummate picture of Dec. 26 at Twin Cities boutiques is a line of shoppers shivering outside Bibelot, waiting as long as three hours for the opportunity to buy gift wrap at 50 percent off. I'm wondering if they're going to bother setting the alarm this year. Bibelot has already run sales on holiday items and more…and so has the rest of the retail world. Still, local shops are going to try to entice us: Karma and Flirt are holding their post-Christmas sale together (and handing out numbers at 9 a.m. should any diehards decide to arrive early). Key North will continue the holiday trend of serving drinks (hot rum) to shoppers. JC Penney is opening earlier than ever: 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 26 – with twice as many doorbusters as last year. Still, they're worried that's not incentive enough. So JC Penney is offering wake-up calls. Sign up at Ask nicely, and they'll probably come over and put the toothpaste on the toothbrush for you as well

Taste of Grand: Restyled

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

When I joined the St. Paul Pioneer Press back in – eek – 2000, covering fashion in St. Paul was no easy feat. I remember attending the annual Taste of Grand fashion show and hearing my mom’s old line playing in my head: "If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all." Back then, there wasn’t much "fashion" happening on Grand Avenue - certainly nothing anyone younger than, say, 80, would have been interested in.
My, how times have changed. Thursday’s show at Macalester’s Kagin Ballroom (what a cool space) was thoroughly modern, from the DJ spinning hot tunes to the cage dancers. From Karma and Quince (what an under appreciated gem) down the avenue to Picky Girl (pictured), there was enough fashion to feel legit – and make me want to shop.
Unfortunately, the event didn’t draw a huge crowd. The $30 ticket could have played a roll in that. But even more so, I think Grand Ave. needs to figure out its audience for this event and market it accordingly. (Were men aware there would be models in bra and panty sets from Flirt?) I just don’t think enough shoppers realize how hard they’re trying or how much fun they could have had at this energetic event.

Lillian’s: Taking over the world

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The owners of Lillian’s have been hounding me for some time. They wanted me to come check out their occasional store (meaning, open just one weekend per month) in Hastings. Then Chaska. Then Forrest Lake. Basically, name your third ring suburb, and there was Lillian’s selling designer inspired handbags and knock-off accessories. Honestly, I didn’t pay too much attention. But now, it’s hard not to notice: Lillian’s is moving in to the city – to South Minneapolis at 50th and Xerxes and in the former Karma space at 841 Grand Avenue in St. Paul (both opening Aug. 7 to 10). It’s hard to believe they can sell enough purses in four days to justify the monthly rent in either of those desirable retail districts, but the two women who started the company in 2005 are quite confident in our endless thirst for inexpensive bags.
