Blown Away

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Leave it to Jon Charles to blow the competition out of the salon. The Twin Cities blow dry king is taking his talent on the road. His new Hairstream mobile blow dry bar hits the road tomorrow. First stop? Obvi: Minnesota Valkyrie football game, 8 p.m. Saturday at Target Center, where Charles and his crew will do blow outs for players from the Lingerie Football League and women from the stands. The decked out Airstream mobile unit, with Philippe Starck furnishings and six styling stations, will be available for hire. Call 612-724-2444 for details.

See Rihanna’s…

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Jon Charles called me the other day sounding giddy, which is not an unusual state for the salon owner, who always has something cooking. Since famed stylist Oribe visited the Jon Charles Salon in Wayzata a few months ago (watch it here), the two have gotten quite chummy. And how do two fabulous salon men share there admiration? With a wig, of course! Not just any wig: Oribe has given Jon Rihanna’s wig, which the singer/cover girl wore in the April issue of Vogue. It’s now on display, in all it’s glory, at the Jon Charles Salon in Uptown. Quirky? For sure. But that’s what we love about Jon – he knows how to seize a Hollywood moment.

Target Field fashion shoot

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

IMG_0649 I've orchestrated fashion shoots at restaurants and parks, museums and zoos, but today's spring fashion shoot for the St. Paul Pioneer Press at the new Target Field has to be the coolest. Not necessarily the easiest, logistically, as we moved models and lights and cameras and the ensuing entourage from the IMG_0650
outfield to the dugouts and back again, but standing on the edge of that perfectly manicured grass, looking out at the stands and the skyline was awesome. Some favorite moments of the day: Being told to set up in the concession staging area, a closet without table or chairs, and ushering the entire crew – photographer, videographer, three hair and makeup people, stylist, assistant, two models, one model's dad, racks of clothing and a steamer – inside, only to find a team of concession workers in training who seemed quite confused by our unlikely presence; Wiping down a seat in the upper decks so a model could pose on it in a DVF dress; models barefoot in the dirt in front of the dugouts (shouldda been there, Mauer), eating cracker jacks by the first baseline, the president of the twins telling photographer Chris Polydoroff our models could sit on top of the dugout, but had better not stand on it; fireworks going off before one shot and dramatic orchestral music coming on during another. Salon owner Jon Charles kept gushing "Amazing, amazing," as we took in views from various sections and primped models in the sun drenched upper decks . "Do you like baseball?" I asked him. He responded, without hesitation, "Not a bit!" Today might have changed that for a few fashionistas. Now if only we could get the Twins to model…IMG_0658

Blowdry Bootcamp…for business?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Jon Charles Salon in Uptown is marching its popular Blowdry Bootcamp free styling seminars straight out to Wayzata where a second salonis set to open this weekend next door to Punch Pizza on Wayzata Blvd. It will be a full service salon – with a twist. Marketing master Jon Charles (his "stimulus promotion" is still on, thanks to yet another plug, this time in O magazine – of course, you read it here first) plans to run bootcamps as often as four nights a week. Great way to get new people into the salon and excited about what the stylists can do. The salon also has an abundance of meeting space, which Charles plans to rent out on a daily basis. The vision: Hold your business meeting at the salon, and everyone gets a cut over lunch! "Companies are always looking for ways to bond," Charles says. The staff that gets blowouts together, works better together. Or at least, looks good while working.

Stimulus styling

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

The recession has hit salons and spas. With people spacing their services further and further apart, spas are looking for ways to entice customers. Here are a couple of current promos worth considering:

  • The Jon Charles Salon "Stimulus Plan." Trim the percentage you lost in your retirement fund off a hair cut or color – up to 50 percent off. Bring proof of your loss to present to the cashier. Available for the next several months.
  • Ivy Spa Club is offering a one-time free Ivy Signature Manicure ($45 value) to guests who spend $95 on spa services and a free Ivy Signature Pedicure ($65 value) to those who spend $145. Offer valid through March 31.
