Oribe the Fabulous

Jon Charles, Oribe and me

“When I was styling Anne for the November cover…” That’s Anne as in Hathaway and cover as in Vogue. And that’s how Oribe grabs the attention of a room full of wide-eyed stylists – some of whom weren’t born when he was learning to tease wigs on Diana Ross. The legendary stylist, who has worked on every major magazine, with every important photographer and on every supermodel and A-list star from Kate Moss to Jennifer Lopez, swooped in to the Jon Charles Salon in Wayzata this week to educate staff on the Oribe product line, which the salon just picked up. Oribe demonstrated a few up-dos, like a variation on the “princess” ‘do he did for Anne. “Up dos can be so contrived – they’re aging. I wanted to take a young approach.” But despite all the fanfare and oohing and aahing at his every shake of the hairspray, Oribe keeps it real. “It’s a ponytail – pushed forward, with a fake piece in back and a couple pieces of crap in it. This is fun!”

Jlo
Marc Anthony: we know you try to keep J. Lo on a short leash, but hiding under her dress? Come on, it's a bit much, even for you.
Smashing – if you could just remove that thing from her hip.

Oribe dishes on 2 Kates

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Just got off the phone with hair god Oribe (think Jennifer Lopez and every super model and movie star. Ever.) who made me feel better about my lifelong bad hair day by telling me that Kate Winslet can't do much with her own hair. Cameron Diaz, however, can. The bitch. I'll have his candid comments on Victoria Beckham, Megan Fox, Jessica Simpson and others in the Pioneer Press next week. But I just have to share this one now: Kate Gosselin. All he knows about embattled "Jon & Kate Plus 8" star is "someone had an affair." But the hair? He likes it! "These days, it's all about being a character. Sexy in the front; crazy in the back. It suits her."
Oribe's new product line will be available at Spalon Montage in June.

Everyone wants to look like Eva Longoria Parker. Her red-hot strapless mermaid style Golden Globes gown is proving to be the most popular for Unique Vintage, which is taking pre-orders on a $238 version "inspired by" the Desperate Housewife's Reem Acra dress. The other Eva, Eva Mendes' white dress is also being copied – er, "recreated" – but it was that spectacular turquoise and diamond necklace that made the look (Mendes being in it didn't hurt), so Unique Vintage owner Katie Echeverry tells me she's on a mad hunt to find something similar at an affordable price point. Echeverry's L.A. boutique and online store is also selling Jennifer Lopez's I'll-show-my-creepy-husband-how-hot-I-am slinky gold dress. All will be available to ship in time for prom. Not that teens are the only ones wearing them, Echeverry says. She even sold some celeb look-alikes for Inaugural balls. Speaking of which, Echeverry says Michelle Obama's Inaugural ball gown will be copied and practically in production before the new first lady even takes hers off. It really doesn't matter what it looks like – Echeverry says everyone is going to want it.

Eva and Jessica’s hairstylist at MOA

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Kenpavesatmoa_4I can’t take everything I read in People magazine as gospel, right? So I say to celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, you did Eva Longoria’s hair for her wedding, right? (I’m a reporter – it’s my job to confirm the facts.) And he says: "You should do your Googling, girl!" Seems Paves is quite comfortable living his life on the pages of gossip rags. He appeared at Mall of America Friday to hype hairdo hair extensions and was a bit miffed to find no more than 20 in the crowd at the start of his show. The mall blamed the bridge tragedy for low traffic – several morning tv and radio interviews were cancelled. Paves was originally supposed to appear on an outdoor stage set up for back-to-school fashion shows, but they moved him inside when no one showed up to at least attract shoppers. Seems only celeb-bingers such as myself know the name Ken Paves. Google, and all. The show did go on, and Paves made the best of it, switching the ‘dos of his J.Lo dancers in mere seconds while gyrating his tiny hips and throwing hair extensions into the audience (that help build the crowd). The man does love his hair extensions. Look for my article on that – and find out what he said he’d do if Jessica Simpson ever broke up with him – in the St. Paul Pioneer Press next Sunday (Aug. 12).
