Nigel Barker: Sexy shopper

America’s Next Top Model judge Nigel Barker and I were in the Mall of America offices this evening trying to decide where to shop before his book signing appearance. He started ticking off his favorite places to hit for his wife: Catherine Malandrino, Jimmy Choo, La Perla. Dreamiest husband ever, to be sure. But I had to bring him down to our Midwestern reality. Would you settle for Burberry or Hugo Boss? He did – and affably shopped Janie and Jack for his kids, too. My favorite moment came while paying for a toy at the Nickelodeon Universe store when a cashier recognized him and sheepishly confirmed, “Nigel?” Then she asked for some ID. Get the whole story in my “Shopping With…” column in the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Janie and Jack

Janieandjack
I was underwhelmed by Janie and Jack, Gymboree’s higher end boutique, which opened at Mall of America today (first floor, south side – just down the hall from Gymboree). The clothes look like Gymboree, but more subdued and more expensive. If I wanted to spend $40 on a pair of toddler boy pants or a little sun dress, I’d rather shop an independent children’s boutique with more unique brands. I’m more anxious for Gymboree to open its other new concept here: Crazy 8, which is supposed to compete with Old Navy, selling baby and children’s clothes that are both style and price conscious. Enough with the giraffe prints and $30 onesies.

New at MOA

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

It’s been a while since Mall of America had an exciting announcement
that didn’t involve SpongeBob. (The Nickelodeon Universe theme park
is supposed to open March 15, by the way.) But finally, MOA is rolling out the welcome mat for a whole new crop of stores, including two new concepts from Abercrombie & Fitch: Gilly Hicks Sydney, "an upscale but moderately priced" underwear brand launching world-wide this year and Ruehl, targeting the post-Abercrombie generation of 22 to 35-year-olds with urban business casual apparel.  After Gap’s "grown-up" Forth & Towne brand tanked before making it to Minneapolis, I’m glad we’re going to get a shot at shopping Ruehl. Other newcomers in the next few months will include Gymboree’s fancier line, Janie and Jack as well as company stores from Levis and Lacoste. Just when shopping starts to seem staid, MOA does come through, reminding us of its power to draw big brands. I just hope someone in this price-sensitive town is actually buying those lovely things at the new Burberry store.
