Will you line up?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

H&M is set to open this Thursday, Oct. 22 at Southdale Center in Edina. As is tradition for the fast fashion chain, the store will open with fanfare at noon, allowing time for excitement to build, music to get louder, employees to dance and, as is often the case, shoppers to line up. When the Twin Cities first H&M opened at Mall of America, the line extended out the door with people who waited hours just to say they were among the first in the door (those who didn't wait in line entered right behind them). But when store No. 2 opened in Woodbury, the scene was much more subdued. Southdale needs this. Wouldn't be surprised to see mall management execs out there dancing with the H&M crew. Will shoppers follow suit? The first 100 get discounts and a gift card worth anywhere for $10 to $100. I'd wait at least a few minutes for that.

Will H&M save Southdale?

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Of all shopping malls to make a big announcement while I was vacationing in the mountains, Southdale Center would not have been my first – or fifth – guess. How long can we reasonably continue to believe "redevelopment plans are in the works"? So I was indeed surprised and tickled to hear that H&M will open at Southdale this fall, with a two-level store nearly as large as the one at Mall of America. It won't make up for the gaping Mervyn's hole, but it could finally create some buzz for the way-past-its-prime mall.
Or will it? Hundreds showed up for the opening of H&M at Mall of America – but that was the first in town. When the second location opened in Woodbury, there was a much more modest turnout. We're H&M regulars now. While the news is sure to be exciting to Southdale regulars, it's unlikely to draw new shoppers the way it would were the store exclusive to the market. But, it could be enough to make other retailers take another look at the mall – which has a higher than average vacancy rate. I'll have more on that in my column this Sunday. Until then, weigh in. Does the arrival of H&M renew your faith in the nation's first covered shopping mall?

Matthew Williamson hits H&M today

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Williamson We missed out on H&M’s first Matthew Williamson collection, but today, the retailer does right by the rest of the country, bringing Williamson’s summer line to H&M stores nationwide, including Mall of America and Woodbury. It’s all about holiday with long flowing dresses, smocks and caftans in weightless fabrics and warm colors. For the first time, Williamson is doing menswear – inspired by his own style. Think proper Englishman traveling the world, mixing classics with ethnic flavor, like a seersucker blazer worn over a Cuban-style print shirt. The comprehensive collection includes accessories and swimwear for women and men. And all of it is at H&M’s usual budget-friendly prices.
