Three Must Have Summer Accessories

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Quick! Name the top three fashion accessories for summer! We fired that question at StyledLife owner Kevin Quinn without warning on live radio Saturday, and he was ready with fantastic advice. Of course you can listen to the Shop Girls interview, but here are the highlights – top down:

1. Hats. They’re not just for bad hair days anymore. The wide brimmed hat is a major statement, but think beyond thebeach. It’s okay to wear a hat indoors. It’s okay to wear a hat – period. Fedoras are fun, even if you’re not Justin Timberlake.

2. Long earrings. Don’t save them  for evening. They’re sexy, flattering and instantly finish a look. Think about it – ifyou’re not wearing a necklace or earrings, it looks like you didn’t try. Pop on the earrings and voila – you’re dressed, and suddenly the bare decolletage seems intentional. Earrings need not “match” the rest of your jewelry – in fact, it’s better if they don’t.

3. Cuffs. Wrists remain the focal point for accessorizing and become the place to really show some personality. So keep stacking those bracelets. Mix colors, textures, finishes.

Still unsure? March into the store and ask for Kevin (or Tim or Allison – the expertise runs deep). Take advantage of theexperts running our local boutiques!

Perks of downsizing

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

Zida Fashion Accessories has moved its original store across the parking lot outside Burnsville Center to a spot more visible, but about half the size. There are actually more bags hanging on the walls of the new space, without seeming cramped. The owners, friends and former flight attendants Machele Baird and Kelly Bray, have gotten savvier about merchandising, and lowering their overhead will actually allow them to take more risks. “We want to step it up,” Bray says. “Customers have been asking for more expensive (translation: higher quality) bags; we want to try some trendier pieces.” Just about everything, jewelry and handbags, at Zida is less than $50. The new store is at 14300 Buck Hill Road, Burnsville. Zida is also open at Shoppes at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove.

Hopkins can’t compete

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

No surprise here: Just four months after opening a second Fringe accessories shop at 50th & France, owner Andrea Rovner plans to close her original location in Hopkins . The old store's lack of ambiance was made even more obvious by the opening of the higher-profile, more polished store in Edina. And while inexpensive accessories seemed an unlikely fit for the notoriously posh 50th & France, it's proving to be a huge hit. (Even those with money get excited about a trendy $18 necklace!). Rovner says her Hopkins customers are flocking to Edina. The Hopkins Fringe store will close at the end of the year.
