NorthernGRADE Men’s Market

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Having modern classic fashion brands like J.W. Hulme Co. and Pierrepont Hicks based in the Twin Cities makes us look good. The two teamed up again to produce the second annual NorthernGRADE men’s market today at Architectural Antiques in Northeast Minneapolis. If you wear bow ties, fitted plaid shirts, slim denim and Red Wing boots – generally all at once – or appreciate men in them, this shopping event is worth hitting. There will be live music, food and spirits, and of course, shopping. NorthernGRADE brings together iconic American-made brands new and old, including Red Wing Shoe Co., Duluth Pack, Stormy Kromer and Taylor Stitch. Go to support them. Go for the people watching. Go to get your man out of pleated khakis. And go to celebrate the cool, creative companies that make Minnesota their home – and the others from around the country that come to be associated with this movement.

NorthernGRADE, Noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Architectural Antiques, 1330 Quincy St. N.E., Mpls.

I Almost Want to Camp

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

There are stores that do a good job catering to a specific demo. And  then there are stores that do their thing so well, you can’t help but want to do it. Even if it’s camping.

Hi, I’m Ali. And I love Midwest Mountaineering. It’s just so homey and welcoming. It feels cozy, and yet, the assortment runs deep, including national brands and interesting locals with a story. One room leads to another, and then another, filled with boats and skis and socks and jackets and packs and strange hooks and cords and carrying cases, and all the gear you never knew you needed to enjoy the great outdoors. At least, I didn’t. I walked in last week (in heels), looking for a functional bag to use as a prop in a photo shoot tomorrow. I had my pick: Patagonia messenger bag in orange, Duluth Pack red and black plaid, Jansport backpacks in a rainbow of cool color combos I’ve never seen at department stores. (Many of them are currently 20 percent off – just in time for back to school!) The help is not only friendly but inspirational: The manager I worked with is headed to Haiti soon on a volunteer mission to bring supplies…much like what you can buy at Midwest Mountaineering.

More to love: Thrifty Outfitters, a store within the store, offers great deals on closeouts, factory seconds and used apparel and gear from top-rate brands.

Men who shop

Baldwin Denim

Men can roll their skinny jeans, show some hairy ankle above shiny loafers, wear a tie on a Saturday without being told to and still look macho. I witnessed it over the weekend at the first ever NorthernGRADE Men’s Market at Architectural Antiques in Northeast Minneapolis. The event showcased American-made brands both modern and classic including Baldwin Denim and Taylor Stitch shirts and Duluth Pack and Fox River Socks.  It was like entering an alternative universe where the men were the best dressed and the primary shoppers. And lots of them were straight!

Walker Lamond, author and hopeless prep

Walker Lamond was there. The author of “Rules for My Unborn Son” wore cropped khakis, a navy blazer, blue button down, plaid tie and horn rimmed glasses. The husband and new dad copped to dressing that way even when not signing books. “I’ve been preppy since college,” he said. “Now it’s cool!” | Mpls.St.Paul Magazine © 2008 MSP Communications, Inc.
