Catching Up with Evan Lysacek

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Bumped into my shopping buddy, Olympic gold medalist and Dancing with the Stars finalist Evan Lysacek at Kare11 Today. It was Evan, me and an armadillo on the show (click here for my designer discount shopping segment). Evan was in town to promote the 2011 Smuckers Stars on Ice tour, which will bring him to the Xcel Energy Center March 13. A couple of years ago when he was in town for the same tour, we hit Len Druskin Man, where I didn’t exactly have to twist Evan’s arm to get him to model skinny jeans. So of course I took note of his outfit in the green room: polar fleece (that he swapped after the TV shoot for a puffy black jacket with gold stripes down the sleeves), shirt, tie, slim black pants and old-school Woolrich lace-up boots. “I tried wearing dress shoes,” he told me, “But I kept slipping.” If the champion figure skater can’t walk our streets, where does that leave the rest of us?

Between the DWTS tour and skating tours, it’s been non-stop travel for Lysacek. Within a year, he says, he’ll have to make a decision about whether or not to compete in the 2014 Olympics. All I know is, when he returns to the Twin Cities in March, he promised I could come backstage to see his skating costumes!

Vanessa Minnillo is gorgeous. Just perfect. No airbrushing needed for that skin. Wow. She wore a long red strapless Issa gown for the Starkey Hearing Foundation Awards Gala in St. Paul, Minn. Sunday and spoke eloquently on the red carpet about the group’s work to provide hearing aids for kids in need. She clearly was the one who steered boyfriend Nick Lachey to this charity, but she deferred to his love of music in explaining their commitment to the cause. She gently ribbed Nick, in Hugo Boss, about his penchant for ironing and told reporters her man is unlikely to follow in his brother and “Dancing with The Stars” champ Drew Lachey’s footsteps on the dance floor. All perfectly adorable and charming. Just one suggestion, Vanessa: lose the chewing gum. It doesn’t look nice.

Backstage with Janice Dickinson

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

IMG_0368 Model, actress agent, reality star-who-won't-quit Janice Dickinson killed some time talking to me before Christopher Straub's show at the St. Paul Hotel Sunday. She looked better than expected up close, although nothing moves on that face. She was aloof, yet down-to-earth ("When I'm not painted and pulled, I'm a middle aged fatigued old lady.") She had never met Minnesota's "Project Runway" favorite and she called him Christian (Siriano slip?) when she introduced him. But she did sit dutifully in the front row next to her good friend, Privileged Model Management owner Craig Damon, who was involved in producing the show. She curled one of her inflated lips when asked to take pictures with fans, but did it anyway. She complimented my dress. She talked to me about beauty ("Drink TONS of water"), modeling ("They look like a factory stamped bunch of cattle"), Heidi Montag's plastic surgery, by her own doctor ("At least I was 32 – I waited until I lactated"), Dancing with the Stars ("Pam Anderson is just neat.") and volcanic ash ("It's so important for algae levels in the ocean. And did you know it's the best thing for damaged hair?") She didn't seem to care much who I work for, only that I had a notebook. I told her I'd likely write a little something for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Little?!!" she said. If you want an expose, I told her, you've got to give me more. "Read the books," she retorted with a shrug.
