Not for the newspaper

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Writing this week about the many indie holiday shopping events coming up in the Twin Cities (see listings here). So many places to soak up the season without battling the throngs at the mall, and so many ways to support local artisans and independent companies making cool, often one-of-a-kind, edgy items. Many will be on display this weekend at the MNfashion Holiday Bazaar. Like, um, these, from Maybe You Should Die:

You won’t see them pictured in the St. Paul Pioneer Press this Sunday…but know that it’s not just pretty jewelry at these crafty events.

Cutest craft ever

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Dear Eat your heart out, Bambi. Wading through images of goods to be showcased at the American Craft Council show at the St. Paul RiverCentre April 16-18 and among the whimsical teapots and sculptural rings, this hand felted wool deer bonnet by Wendy Allen made me smile. It's $78. You'll have to provide your own to-die-for little face to put in it.

Way to go, Max’s

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

It’s easy to get caught up in the designer chocolates at Max’s. But there are other reasons to check out this St. Louis Park shop, which offers an elegant mix of jewelry, art and chocolate. Max’s was recently named one of the top retailers of 2008 by Niche magazine. The award recognizes retailers who are committed to fair business practices and to growing the North American craft community. Only 33 galleries and stores throughout the country received the honor. Seems the occasion calls for…well, chocolate!
