B&Lu’s Plus Size News

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Big news. Twin Cities-based plus-size fashion brand B&Lu is opening a boutique in Hopkins. The store will feature B&Lu’s affordable, trendy apparel, sizes 12 and up. From dresses to denim, no piece is more than $70.  Plus: the store will extend B&Lu’s brand into accessories – jewelry, scarves, shoes – and home furnishings. Owner Christine Sholl is bringing in inexpensive, re-purposed pieces, which she describes as “classic vintage farmhouse meets Parisian market whimsy.” Sholl plans to add regular size women’s clothes in the near future as well.

B&Lu will be open the first Thursday through Sunday of every month (and during select festivals and fairs) – starting today, July 7. The store is also available for private shopping parties. 1007 Main Street, Hopkins

New plus size fashion resource

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Lucielu The "Lu" of plus size fashion e-tailer b&lu has parted ways with her Twin Cities-based sister, moved to Green Bay and launched her own contemporary plus size line: Lucie Lu. The similarities are undeniable: modern, feminine looks driven by style rather than size. Like b&lu, Lucie Lu is extremely price-conscious: Dresses for $39; jeans for $42. Where b&lu is quite whimsical, Lucie appears to be going for a somewhat more refined look, offering blazers with sheen and cable knit cardigans in addition to smart dresses and chic tops. Sibling rivalry looks to be a boon to the 1X to 5X fashionista.

Everyone who sells anything seems to be caught up in Black Friday fever this year. Stores that hadn't planned a sale are making one up as we speak. That's the beauty of smaller retailers – they can discount on a dime! Some of the latest: Urban Junket is offering 20 percent off on its popular new eco-friendly, multi-functional, bright colored T.O.T.E. bags. Enter THANKS at checkout through Nov. 30. Arafina is offering 30 percent off clearance – just until NOON, 20 percent after that. Doozie's doing doorbusters – 20 percent off, just until noon. Mystery discount at Creative Kidstuff: 10 to 30 percent off your purchase. Uber Baby's got 40% off. Ooh – here's a good one: 30 percent off site-wide at trendy plus size retailer today only. Check Sales/Specials for tons more Black Friday sales more civilized and stylish than big box mayhem.

In case you missed my plus size fashion spread in last Sunday’s Pioneer Press, here’s a list of useful shopping resources:

  • La Rue Marche in Hudson, Wis. recently added a substantial selection of trendy plus-size apparel
  • b & lu – St. Paul-based website devoted to trendy, affordable plus size fashions
