More to love at BlackBlue

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

I was thrilled to have to wait in line to get close to the Penguin shirts and Alternative Apparel hoodies yesterday at BlackBlue. This fantastically styled Selby & Dale men’s boutique – where American heritage was cool before J. Crew said so – deserves to thrive. From the flannels draped over wooden rods to owner Steven Kang’s cuffed skinny jeans and untied Red Wing work boots to the leather bags artfully displayed beside old photographs on the white walls – it’s the sort of place that makes you want to embody the whole look. Now, women will be able to do just that: Kang is carefully adding a small assortment of women’s apparel including A.P.C. and Hyden Yoo. And BlackBlue turned the lens on local fashion photographer and Minneapoline blogger Ellen Dahl Lawson to model the first arrivals. Love it all? See more here.

St. Paul Capital Collective

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The dramatic central lobby of Landmark Center provided a perfect stage for a runway show tonight, featuring fall fashion from several St. Paul boutiques. Too bad more shoppers weren’t there to see it. (Especially fun to see vintage Lula ensembles look so modern, and every Minnesota man should take a style cue from BlackBlue.) Tickets for the St. Paul Capital Collective show were $40, which is a lot, even as a benefit for downtown improvement groups. So, there are kinks to work out. But producer and tireless supporter of local retail Richard Moody is determined to bring this show back, bigger and better, next year. St. Paul finally has enough fashionable boutiques to make it work so east side shoppers, prepare  to represent!

No more excuses, men

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Blackblue Men are having a moment. I'm in the midst of pulling men's accessories for a Spaces magazine article and the biggest challenge is choosing which men's stores and which amazing pieces to include. A year ago, I might have been hard pressed to come up with a handful of cool, local boutiques even catering to men. Suddenly, it's an explosion: Kuhlman is back in business, martinpatrick3 gets better each season, StyledLife finally has the space to expand on accessories and gifts for men, Heimie's Haberdashery is thriving in St. Paul and the latest, exciting addition: BlackBlue (pictured, and see more of the shop's enviable aesthetic here). Time to step it up a notch, men. There's no excuse not to.
