North Face opens on Grand

April 23rd, 2009
by Allison Kaplan

What is it about the urban Grand Avenue in St. Paul that makes retailers think hiking, skiing, outdoorsy apparel? I'm still campaigning for Anthropologie in that sorry space between Pottery Barn and J. Crew. But this week, I'll settle for North Face, which opens Friday, April 24 at 799 Grand (where Smith & Hawken used to be) – effectively bookending the avenue with Patagonia at 1648 Grand. No buzz about it, but then, there's already a North Face in Uptown. The company stores feature more than outerwear – clothing for men and women, shoes and bags.

IS there a POSSIBILITY that Anthropologie will come to St. Paul? Is there a petition I can sign?
That would just make my year.

I would love to sign that petition as well…I’ve had enough of the sales people at Anthropologie in Edina giving me dirty looks when I try on 20 different items of clothing. It’s not my fault everything is gorgeous!

I would also sign a petition to get Anthropologie in St. Paul. I don’t understand why all these outdoor stores are opening up. I was disappointed to see that North Face was going in the Smith & Hawken space. I also think a Paper Source would work great on Grand.

I wasn’t initially excited about a North Face on Grand, I admit, but my husband and I each got a postcard in the mail advertising the opening and promising a free gift if we came within the first few days the store was open. We went, found several items we liked (shoes for my husband, pants for me), and when we went to the cashier, we presented our postcards. The free gift? A $25 gift card! I was shocked and thrilled — it meant we got a significant discount off our shoes and pants. Yay, North Face!
