Bags, boxes and more Macy’s gripes

December 18th, 2007
by Allison Kaplan

It’s been six months since Macy’s virtually eliminated paper shopping bags – you know, the ones sturdy enough to hold several purchases and tall enough to contain a gift box. That’s right, welcome to the holidays at Macy’s, where you have to carry your box separately because it doesn’t fit into the flimsy plastic bag – that is, if you can get a gift box. Half the time, they don’t seem to have boxes behind the register (did the holiday just sneak up on them?) and I’ve yet to encounter a sales associate who offered to locate one for me. I went out of my way to the customer service desk to get a box – only to discover when I got home that they had given me one too small.

And why do Macy’s employees seem surprised that shoppers want gift receipts? Most associates don’t seem ask, and when you tell them you need one, they get all hot and bothered and have to void the transaction and start over. 1. Why not set up the registers to automatically spit out a gift receipt, like they do at Target, or at least make it possible to add one at the end of the transaction. 2. If that really is not possible, why not train associates to ask before ringing if the customer wants a gift receipt.

After all, we’re trying to follow the rules.

I have been really disappointed in Macys as of late, especially at Christmas time, and I miss Marshall Fields. I was recently shopping at Macys in San Diego (on a weekend getaway) and I was really disappointed in the plastic bags, the rude sales girls, and the messy, shoddy displays with everything crammed together. It seemed more like a discount store. I bought a sweater and then left for the more elegant, upscale, customer oriented Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, which were BEAUTIFULLY decorated for the holidays. Not so sure I will be doing much more shopping at Macys. What happened to them?!! I think with the exception of their big store in New York City, they have gone way downhill. P.S. Ali, I love your shopping blog!!

We all can attest to the fact that customer service has taken a down-turn. This has been happening for years. It just seems more prevalent around the holidays because we are doing so much more shopping.
Are the better prices really worth it? Is that close proximity really worth it?
Vote with your pocket books. That is how you will get their attention.

as much as I agree with the bad customer service at Macy’s , I have to tell you I was given very nice quality paper shopping bags with a number of purchases over the last couple of weeks.
Red ones with the Macy’s star on them or white with the red star. And I was given them without asking for them!!!
once in a while the devil must get its’ due!!!!

As I understand it, from shopping at Macy’s recently, the stickers they slap onto all the tags while you’re checking out act as gift reciepts – nice, because then as long as you don’t cut the tag off, you’ll be able to return it no problem.

  8. Johnny says:

Yes, those stickers they slap on the tag (actually called “cross reference labels”) don’t seem to be recognized here in the DC area. On several occasions I have been sent gifts from Macys from the west coast and I try to return them to a Macys here on the east coast. They have no idea what the stickers are for and their scanners don’t seem to be able to read them. I end up having to talk to the manager and arguing, etc.

I was shopping at Macy’s yesterday for a long dress. I found one that would work. When my purchase was rung up it came up at full price. I questioned this as there were 40% off signs all over the department and the exact same dress in a petite size was marked down by $77.00. The associate told me my dress was not included in the 40% off and as far as the petite size being marked down and the missy size not her comment was that is just the way it is.
If I had not needed the dress for a special occasion I would have left it there. The associates were very rude and seemed very disinterested in helping customers. Just to ask them a question like where is the dressing room seems to put them out.
Give me back Daytons!!!!!! Even Marshall Fields was better than this.

  10. Cindy says:

Bring back Dayton’s when there was such a thing called customer service. I was downtown over the weekend and the store was nearly
empty. No employees in sight! I used to love Macy’s when it was the only at MOA but now, since they have saturated our market, the merchandise seems inferior and cutomer service is non existant!

    Macy’s Macy’s Macy’s what are you thinking?
Did you knoiw Macy’s has a Lingerie Star Rewards program? They promote it often in their newspaper ads. Well it has taken me over a year to collect my merchandise credit toward a complimentary bra.
Seems they don’t want to apply this program to the Wacoal Bras which average $50, too much of a loss for you Macy’s?
When I was first introduced by signage at the Rosedale Store Fall of 2006, I inquired of the sales associate and was told, “there is nothing to sign up for, we (credit) do all the tracking for you”. My instincts told me that just seemed a little to “easy” so I followed up with a telephone call to their customer service department November of 2006. I was told the same thing.
From that point, I have tried to obtain resolution. All I kept being sent was a form letter that they are working on it.
Calls to store managers, department managers, inquires with various sales associates and even their customer service department no one could give me answers.
In fact, most complained about the program and indicated they have had nothing but problems with the tracking. Employees were very vocal about not receiving their own complimentary items.
In August of 2007 I was snapped at by a customer service representative who told me I didn’t sign up for the program and that is the problem – for over 9 months I was never told you had to sign up for anything. We do “all” the work for you. HMMMM
Well, it took the efforts of a sales associate and department manager from one of their stores to help me receive resolution. That process still took several months.
I was nicely reminded that the program is based on an average based on combined purchases of bras, panties or hoisery. Again, I have to wonder what training is happening, because marketing has not promoted it that way in their advertising.
When I shared my story in early December with a manager from the Maplewood Store, she assured me her store manager would want to hear my concerns -not knowing what their turnover is, wondering if she is the person I spoke to a year earlier who didn’t know the program? They must have cut telephones from their budget, because I have never received a telephone call.
I am sitting on a $25 Star Rewards Certificate and once I redemn it, I’m done with Macy’s. Long time customer – over 38 years!

I really think Macy’s has gone down hill ever since they took over here in Minnesota. There are designer brands which I used to purchase at Marshall Fields who won’t sell to Macy’s. The Twin Cities doesn’t have very many places to purchase the designer brand which are so popular on the coast and no we have lost another one. Even the Oval room has less and less handbags that I like.
