You and Me

Monday, April 18th, 2011

I popped in on Tim + Thom Friday at their new South Minneapolis retail space You and Me, shared with Katy Schmaty jewelry. The boys were slaving over a sewing machine and steamer, finishing designs for the evening’s Voltage: Fashion Amplified, but they couldn’t have been more polite about my bad timing. The self-taught designers and tailors are making fashion accessible beyond runway shows: Come into their funky little shop, and buy a reinvented jacket off the rack (they describe their look as inspired by Twin Cities bicycle culture), or get something custom made. Heck, they’ll even fix the hem on your jeans. Not necessarily for the Ann Taylor crowd, but then, everybody needs to mix it up now and then. 2114B Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis, 612-823-8200

Voltage Spring 2010 Preview

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Fresh from the Voltage Spring 2010 Preview fashion show tonight at the studios of Vision Management, it's exciting to see the local fashion scene growing up. This was an invite-only event geared towards getting retailers interested in selling the clothes that will appear in the Voltage: Fashion Amplified show on April 16. The objective being to take local designs from runway to retail. I'll share my perspective on that in my Savvy Shopper column in this Sunday's St. Paul Pioneer Press. But I won't keep you in suspense over the hip crowd that attended tonight's show: Project Runway's Christopher Straub and Fox 9's Robyne Robinson were there, having contributed accessories for the show. Macy's fashion expert Laura Schara and the owners of several local boutiques were there – as was my shopping buddy, Calvin Klein model Will Defiel, just back from walking in the Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabanna shows in Milan. Not bad. But about the fashion. PFT Couture was a definite highlight (shown with a Christopher Straub handbag): IMG_0404

Danielle Everine showed potential with a feminine take on tailored clothing: IMG_0398 And here's CK model Will Defiel, just because he looks so cute. IMG_0396

Fashion shows — mark the calendar

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Macy’s is hoping to get some buzz going by announcing the date for this year’s Glamorama fall fashion extravaganza: Aug. 17 at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis. (Details and ticket information to come this spring.)

While Glamorama has long been considered the Twin Cities’ biggest fashion event of the year, featuring top designers, national talent and a lavish after party, Voltage Fashion Amplified is fast becoming known as the premier showcase for local design and music. Show creator Anna Lee took last year off to regroup following the overwhelming success of her first two Voltage shows. This April 11, Voltage is back at First Avenue, and if the new Voltage website is any indication, the event promises to be even bigger and slicker than before. Participating designers include Katherine Gerdes of "Project Runway" and Kimberly Jurek of Kjurek Couture, which is about to go national. Read the designer bios on the Voltage website and you’ll never again complain that Minnesotans have no sense of style.

Stay tuned for ticket information — this show is sure to be a sell out.
