Trench coat, $54.99, by Jason Wu for Target

Step aside–the black trench is mine. Jason Wu’s capsule women’s collection is scheduled to debut at Target stores and Target.com on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. It’s the perfect follow-up to Target’s web-crashing Missoni frenzy: Tons of positive buzz, but more manageable scope. (Pleated skirts and tie-waist shirts alone, no matter how pretty and affordable, are probably not enough to bring down target.com). At 53 pieces of women’s apparel and accessories, Wu’s Target collection is considerably smaller than Missoni for Target, which included everything from tumblers to journals.

And yet, on the heels of Target’s smash success with Missoni, which blew out of stores in hours, there is heightened anticipation for Wu. Now we know: snooze, and lose out on designer fashion–this time, for $60 or less. Wu is a hot, young designer who skyrocketed to fame when First Lady Michelle Obama wore his dress to an inaugural ball in 2009.  Last week’s New York launch party for Wu drew plenty of star power, including actresses Blake Lively, Emmy Rossum and Jaime King (all dressed in Wu for Target, of course).

It’s worth noting that Missoni hit Target on a Tuesday, as opposed to the more typical Sunday launch cycle, like for Wu. I pressed Target’s publicists to find out if pieces might trickle in early…particularly at a store like downtown Minneapolis to capitalize on weekday traffic…but the answer was a firm “it doesn’t arrive in stores until Sunday.”

Fine by me–I’ll take chips and dip for the big game to go with my new coat.

Target spring designer collections

BLook_5B Impatiently tapping my toes until the April 18 launch of Cynthia Vincent for Target. Colorful ballet flats, gladiator wedges, and strappy, studded flats that are sure to be the summer go-to – for $24.99. Also on the 18th, look for a Target limited edition collection of hip hats from Eugenia Kim. Wish I could say I was as excited about Zac Posen's fashion collection for Target (see below) launching April 25, but while the look book is dutifully modern and edgy, past dressing room disappointments tell me the bitty skirts and retro swimwear won't work on most women beyond high school. Thank goodness for accessories.Zac_Posen_for_Target_Look_8

I’m a Jenny?!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Annasui6 By Sunday afternoon, the day the "Gossip Girl"-inspired Anna Sui for Target collection officially debuted in select stores, sizes were picked over (is everyone a medium?). The quality seems better than some past Target designer collections, which photograph amazingly well but disappoint in person. I was generally impressed by the Sui pieces, other than the sequin feather detailing on a gray dress which looked like something my kids glued on. Swept up in the moment, and pressured by the two girls grabbing dresses around me, I wanted a piece of Sui. I picked a silk sleeveless black wrap dress with white geometric print. Realized when I got to work today and reviewed the Target Look Book, which is divided into four themes, for each of the four main female characters, that my dress is a Jenny. A Jenny! I would have thought I'd want to be a Serena, but feel more appropriate in a Blair. Never even considered the rocker-edged Jenny. It's a whole new me. Assuming I don't decide I'm too old, or too busty to wear the dress and return it.
