Brazilian Blowout fallout

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Twin Cities salon chain Spalon Montage reacted swiftly to reports that the uber trendy Brazilian Blowout hair smoothing treatment contains formaldehyde. The company denies the report, by the Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology. Nevertheless, Spalon has suspended the service – citing safety concerns for clients and employees. Accolades Salon in St. Paul also switched to competing keratin treatments, owner Brad Schlaeger said, after employees began complaining about eye irritation from working with the product.

Spalon Montage makeover

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Picture this: Gorgeous new salon and spa swathed in orchids, throngs of skinny, coiffed blondes in little black dresses sipping cocktails while makeover subjects get dyed, plucked and styled, and former Minnesota Viking Esera Tuaolo belts out ballads over a DJ's microphone. Such was the smashing bash tonight to celebrate the complete remodel of Spalon Montage in Edina. Beautiful space – huge improvement. Lobby straight out of a design magazine. The spa is much bigger. The women's locker room is nicer (though still underwhelming compared to the scale of the facility). Could have taken a nap in the space-age sound massage pedicure chairs – they help to justify the $70 price for a pedicure. And the new Thai Yoga Massage sounds like my kind of yoga: someone else does the poses while I enjoy the massage. (Wonder if I could convince my editors to let me test that service?) I'll leave you with this thought to ponder: are stylists taught in beauty school to be tall, skinny,
smokers in dresses that verge on slutty, or is it just coincidence?

Oribe dishes on 2 Kates

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Just got off the phone with hair god Oribe (think Jennifer Lopez and every super model and movie star. Ever.) who made me feel better about my lifelong bad hair day by telling me that Kate Winslet can't do much with her own hair. Cameron Diaz, however, can. The bitch. I'll have his candid comments on Victoria Beckham, Megan Fox, Jessica Simpson and others in the Pioneer Press next week. But I just have to share this one now: Kate Gosselin. All he knows about embattled "Jon & Kate Plus 8" star is "someone had an affair." But the hair? He likes it! "These days, it's all about being a character. Sexy in the front; crazy in the back. It suits her."
Oribe's new product line will be available at Spalon Montage in June.
