A Tall Tale About Espadrilles

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Bettye Muller "Sage," $170

The buyers at Pumpz & Co. tell me espadrille sales are up – literally. Their customer is buying a higher heel this year. In the past, the Galleria boutique has had to special order espadrilles in a 2-inch height. This year, 3.5-4 inch heels are selling. Could mean a younger customer is shopping Pumpz, or the usual suspects are willing to rise up for fashion. Either way, Pumpz is thrilled by the sexy shift.

Double the shoes

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

After more than 20 years together, Grethen House and Netc are splitting up. No need to pick sides – the separation is amicable. Netc is moving down the block at 50th & France, to the former Stephanie’s space near The Loft. Owner Nancy has a new partner as she starts contemplating scaling back her workload. They will open as Netc the first week of June with an expanded assortment of high-end shoes and accessories. Meanwhile, Grethen House is wasting no time filling the void with its own spin on shoes and accessories to complement the designer fashions that have made this boutique a destination for decades. From two proven vets like these, I say the more the merrier.

Floating heels hit the suburbs

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Floatingheel You've seen them in magazines and probably figured the preposterous
heel-less heel would never make it off the pages. But StyledLife associate Allison Werthmann-Radnich rocked Fendi's floating heels for a
fashion seminar at the Galleria yesterday…and didn't stumble even
once. Floatingheel2 She paid just $80 for them at designer resale boutique June and rounded out the look with a $10 dress from The Clearance Rack at 35th and Nicollet in Minneapolis layered over long and short sleeve tops and French Connection Liquid Leather pants from Macy's. You've got to admire the effort – and the fact that she stood on her tiptoes in those shoes all day long.

Love the shoes

Laruemarche
I really just can not say enough about the shoe selection at La Rue Marche in Hudson, Wis. Don't get me wrong, I could buy a lot of clothes and jewelry at this feminine boutique, but every time I visit, it's the shoe table that has me oohing and aahing the most. Chic, wearable, colorful and best of all, original. You're sure to find styles and brands you won't see everywhere – or anywhere – in town. Lisa Shortridge knows what girls want to walk in, and how much we're willing to pay.

New shoes

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

It hit me last week during a fashion show for top customers at Anthropologie (thanks, Mom, for making me your plus one) that I am in dire need of transitional shoes. Somehow, this seems to happen every spring — I’ve got my boots; I’ve got my sandals. But what to wear when it’s 50-60ish? I needed ballet flats, peep toes, something! I hit the jackpot at my new favorite Mall of America shoe store One Thousand Steps. Along with the usual Steve Madden platforms and Puma sneakers are brands you don’t see elsewhere in town. I immediately zeroed in on the most adorable pair of round toe yellow wedges by Vagabond for $70. Before I made it to the checkout counter, I noticed a light blue suede peep toe with a big button by Nana. At just $55, how could I resist? Blue can be a neutral. It can! Nordstrom is no longer the only place to shop for shoes at MOA.  Besides One Thousand Shoes, Aldo has two new shoe stores at the mall: First, blending style and comfort, and Spring, for younger trendsetters. Staccato, the Hong Kong based fashion footwear chain, is also worth a stop, and how convenient, it’s located right between Nordstrom and DSW!
