Brazilian model Camila Alves has a new handbag line on QVC. There. Now that’s been said, and we can delve into more pressing matters, like how much time do Alves, her movie star partner Matthew McConaughey and their two young children spend on the beach?

“Not that much, really,” Alves said during an interview Saturday on Shop Girls, myTalk 107.1. Listen to a podcast here.

Alves and McConaughey live at the beach, and photographers are perched outside their residence on a daily basis, waiting for a shot – Levi’s soaked, droopy diaper and all. “It’s just part of the package,” Alves says of the near constant attention.

Muxo by Camila Alves launches Friday at qvc.com. The leather bags, inspired by different regions of her native Brazil, will sell for $126 to $260. Alves says she got into the handbag business with her mother to create distinct styles she wanted to carry – that could withstand the wear and tear of a supermodel’s globetrotting. At qvc, she’s bringing the prices down for the masses.

Back to Matthew McConaughey. Do you ever tell him, I asked, to put a shirt on?

“Why would I?” Alves replied.

Good point.

Living Proof: Price disparity

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Livingproof Yes I did double back across Mall of America to save $4.50 today and it gave me great satisfaction. Sephora is selling Living Proof. styling products (good for taming the frizzies – one of the few I'll vouch for) for $24, same price as the Living Proof website. But QVC@The Mall and QVC.com has the same products for $19.50! That's a significant difference. Good to remember QVC for beauty and haircare – they carry a lot of quality, high-end brands, and the prices are competitive. Of that, I've got Proof.

40-pump girl

Wen With the water pelting my back, I diligently pumped the bottle of WEN cleansing conditioner (don't call it shampoo!) 40 times.
Forty times!
Inventor and QVC star Chaz Dean assured me I'd need that much to cleanse and moisturize my thick, dry hair. I told him I'd go broke, if I didn't get carpal tunnel syndrome first. But I followed instructions and worked that huge handful of creamy fig scented stuff into my mane. It felt and smelled like pureed fruit being dumped on my head (more a parenting reality than beauty technique in my world). WEN does not lather, because Dean says lathering agents include harsh chemicals that damage hair. But I had no trouble working it in and didn't mind the new sensation. After rinsing, my hair felt heavier – it hung neatly, without frizzies or snarls. When I dried it, I must say: it was the shiniest and softest I've ever felt. I can't think of another product – and I try lots – that made such a noticeable difference. The question is, was it a good difference. I'm no master stylist (as has been well-documented in this blog), but the softness seemed to make my hair look overwhelmingly fluffy rather than piece-y (my ultimate goal). Dean says the more I use the product, the better my hair will get (he's big on quantity, and at $28 per bottle). I'm curious enough to stick with it – at least until this bottle runs out.
Check out my funny conversation with Chaz in the Pioneer Press on Saturday, June 27.

Say what you will about her face, Joan Rivers is a hard working broad. She lost her voice during the publicity blitz for her books/jewelry/Celebrity Apprentice, which brought her to the Twin Cities Saturday, but she still called in to my radio show, Shop Girls, right on schedule and squeaked out a solid 10 minutes on the wonders of plastic surgery ("it can make you look gorgeous"), her jewelry for QVC ("I put on three necklaces this morning and asked everyone which one to take off. I ended up wearing them all") and the red carpet, where she's been replaced by Lisa Rinna, a face nearly as pulled and plumped as her own. She took credit for pioneering the red carpet interview (true, come to think of it) and declared the current state of awards pre-shows boring, boring, boring. No one makes mistakes; everything is too controlled. She swears she didn't even watch the Oscar's pre-show this year. But she did know enough to blast Mickey Rourke – both the clothes and the surgically altered face.
The "Everything Joan" jewelry boutique will be on display at the Mall of America QVC store through March. What keeps her working, other than paying for all that surgery? She said: "I love style and fashion more than life itself!"
